Teucrium polium plant extract as a novel anticancer agent in the near future: Is it possible?

Cancer is a major public-health problem in the world and is the leading cause of death in economically developed countries and the second leading cause of death in developing countries. World-wide about 10 million people per year diagnosed with cancer and more than 6 million people in the world are cancer patients. Currently, one in four deaths in the United States is due to cancer.,
Throughout medical history, nature has long been showed to be an excellent and reliable source of new drugs  and it has been estimated that about 50% of the prescription products in Europe and USA were originating from natural products or their derivatives. Furthermore, it is well-established that plants have been found to possess significant anti-cancer properties. Approximately, more than 60% of currently used anti-cancer chemotherapeutic drugs are derived in one way or another, from natural source. The Teucrium polium (TP) is a wild growing flowering plant and is found in South-Western Asia and Europe and also in North Africa., TP has been used for over 2000 years in traditional medicine due to its diuretic, diaphoretic, anti-pyretic and anti-spasmodic properties. This plant is used in Middle-Eastern and Mediterranean countries folk medicine for treating many disease such as abdominal pain, indigestion, diabetes, and urogenital disease and has been reported to have hypolipidemic, hypoglycemic, anti-nociceptive and anti-inflammatory effects.,
Recent studies suggest that TP plant extract posse strong anti-cancer activity. In an in vitro study by kandouz et al., which examine the effect of the aqueous extract of TP on selected parameters in prostate cancer cell lines, showed that TP plant extract causes a dramatic decrease in cell invasion and metastasis of human prostate cancer cells. Another in vitro study with aim to examine, the effects of TP plant extract on cell proliferation, cell cycle progression and cell death of human lung cancer cell lines, demonstrate that TP plant extract inhibits cell proliferation and deregulates cell cycle progression and more importantly, cause a dramatic cell death in human lung carcinoma cells.
In a study by Rajabalin, with aim to evaluate the chemosensitizer effect of the methanolic extract of TP on cytotoxic and apoptotic activity of four conventional chemotherapeutic drugs (vincristine, vinblastine, doxorubicin, and cisplatin), showed that methanolic extract of TP potentiates the cytotoxic and apoptotic effects of vincristine, vinblastine and doxorubicin against a panel of cancerous cell lines and suggests that methanolic extract of TP has the potential to be an effective and safe chemosensitizer agent for cancer therapy. In addition, Eskandary et al. showed a cytotoxic activity of TP methanolic extract on glioblastoma multi-forme, which is one of the most aggressive primary brain tumors with a grim prognosis. Moreover, the few adverse effects of TP have been reported, which indicate the relatively safe nature of this medicinal herb. In view of all these in vitro studies, animal experimentation and clinical trials are essential to determine the potential anticancer effects of TP for cancer therapy.
